The rapid advance of the internet had opened up spread betting to a much wider audience. If you have a reliable internet connection, you can quite easily place spread bets from home.

There are a huge number of spread betting companies offering spread betting on a vast range of financial outcomes. Many of these companies offer spread betting simulations where you can practice your spread betting skills before taking the big step of using real money.

Other companies offer you 'penny' spread betting for a limited period where the minimum bet can be as little as one penny. That way, gains and losses can be limited to a reasonable amount of money. After the special offer period has finished, the minimum amount will revert to the normal 50p or £1 per point bet.

To find a spread betting company, do a search on Google for 'Spread Betting'. The results will yield a huge number of companies and brokers, and you are advised to research each one before making your final decision.

How to set stop losses

If you decide to try your hand at spread betting, the first lesson to learn is how to place stop losses. Stop losses automatically end your bet if a value falls below a certain level. For example, if the FTSE index is 5000 and you a £1 bet that it will will go up, you will get £1 for every point that it finishes over 5000. If you are wong, and the the index begin to drop below 5000, your potential for losses is unlimited unless you set a stop loss. A sensible spread better will set a stop loss at say 4500 so that the maximum loss on your bet would be £500.
